The inclusion teacher plays an essential role in supporting the diverse learning needs of students in an inclusive elementary classroom environment. Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, educational assistants, parents and administration, the inclusion teacher ensures that all students-including those with neurodivergencies and learning challenges receive appropriate supports, accommodations, and instructional strategies to achieve success in accordance with Alberta Education’s inclusive education framework within a continuum of supports.

Key responsibilities:

Collaborative planning & support:

-Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and implement differentiated instruction and Universal Design for Learning

-Support the monitoring of I.P.P.’s

-Coordinate and collaborate with educational assistants and external service providers like O.T., S.L.P. and psychological supports

-Support classroom teachers with the creation of classroom profiles and supports

Student-centered instruction:

-Provide direct support and instruction to students with diverse learning needs, utilizing Alberta Education literacy and numeracy resources

-Implement and model evidence-based strategies for academic, behavioral and social-emotional learning

Assessment & documentation:

-Work with coaches and the collaborative student support team to identify student learning needs through observations, assessments and data analysis of Alberta Education literacy and numeracy results

-Maintain accurate and confidential records of assessment data

Leadership and professional development:

-Collecting and analyzing data for action research

-Engage in professional learning

Qualifications:

-Education degree with specialization in or coursework in inclusion and exceptional learners

-Valid Alberta Teaching certification

-Knowledge of Alberta Education inclusive framework

-Skills in collaboration, literacy & numeracy intervention and behavior support
